This book is a collection of works by graphic designer Hong Wei, a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). Hong has long been dedicated to exploring the intersection of traditional Chinese culture and contemporary visual design, and his creations link tradition and modernity.

The book adopts an overall black color scheme, imparting a sense of solemnity. Its 32k format ensures easy and comfortable reading, while the interior pages interior pages utilize various textured papers and corresponding printing techniques to faithfully reproduce the characteristics of each piece. The book’s structure is built through a rational editorial approach.

As a personal portfolio, the book categorizes Hong Wei’s designs for various industries under the themes of “Form,” “Meaning,” “Context,” and “Object,” offering insights into his profound reflections on design and life. Each phase of his journey is represented by different underlying tones, from darkness and chaos to the gradual awakening, followed by clarity, and from the white of dawn to nightfall—a cyclical structure that mirrors his evolving understanding of design as an art form. Life encompasses multiple realms, and so does design. For Hong Wei, “seeing things as they are” represents the ultimate conclusion of his design philosophy.

Overall, this book is not only a collection of Hong Wei’s works but also a tribute to design. A gift, in essence, is a medium that conveys information, emotion, and aspiration. As Kan Tai-Keung writes, “Reading Hong Wei’s new book, one can feel that the ‘gift’ he offers to readers is not in its material weight, but in its deep emotional significance.” Named as a gift, we hope it truly becomes a cherished gift—a long-awaited, beloved treasure, and a precious contribution to contemporary Chinese graphic design.
