Hanwen Zhengkai is a typeface developed in the 1930s by Zheng Wuchang (1894–1952) to create a uniquely Chinese print culture that reflects the spirit of the new era while maintaining traditional essence. It is one of the representative fonts in the East Asian Chinese character cultural sphere.

Founder Type began its digitalization process in 2016. Based on a thorough review of the history of Hanwen Zhengkai, the team collected numerous samples and printed materials of the typeface through various channels for detailed sorting, comparison, and analysis. After setting design goals and concepts, the actual digital restoration commenced. Over six years, this digital restoration and redesign have brought Hanwen Zhengkai back to life as a modern computer font.

The typeface manual deconstructs the character “正” (zhèng) into its individual strokes, dividing the content into five sections accordingly
1.The 20th anniversary of the birth of Hanwen Zhengkai Movable Type; 2. The Development, spread, influence, and redesign of Hanwen Zhengkai – commemorating the 90th anniversary of the birth of Hanwen Zhengkai; 3. Model applications; 4. Typographic layout; 5. Redesign of Hanwen Zhengkai.
In Chinese culture, the character “正” is commonly used as a counting unit for five, and this method of categorization resonates deeply within Chinese cultural contexts.

In the section of typographic layout, illustrations themed around the “Four Seasons” and “Twelve Flowers of the Year” were created, accompanied by scientific information. Through diverse typographic designs featuring equally weighted texts, the beauty of applying Hanwen Zhengkai is explored.
