Regarded as the “Bible for Tea Lovers,” this book compiles eight classical works on tea culture, ranging from The Classic of Tea and The Record of Tea included in Complete Library in Four Divisions, to Lu Tingcan’s Continuation of the Classic of Tea from the Qing Dynasty. It aims to offer tea enthusiasts a superior blend of ancient texts and modern craftsmanship, akin to a “finest tea.”
For Chinese people, drinking tea is often expressed as tea tasting or tea enjoyment, ultimately seeking a peaceful state of mind amidst the rising tea steam. This mindset can be illustrated by Su Shi leisurely setting up a small red clay stove, slowly brewing a pot of spring tea while contemplating the saying “The true pleasure of life lies in the tranquility.” It’s what Zhang Kejiu sought in his secluded mountain retreat, where he brewed tea with spring water and made liquor from pine blossoms. And it’s the “serenity and far-reaching vision” that Lu Yu, the “Sage of Tea,” discerned amidst the swirling tea leaves.
The cover is made of washed kraft paper, soft and resilient, with the title “The Canon of Tea” embossed using traditional letterpress printing. The colors complement each other, creating a warm and elegant tactile experience. The inner pages are printed on 50gsm Bible paper in two colors, faithfully reproducing the small-scale regular script calligraphy and fine-line drawings from the Wenjin Pavilion edition of Complete Library in Four Divisions. The interleaved illustrations are printed on 45gsm Xuan paper, featuring nine carefully selected masterpieces of Chinese tea-themed art throughout history. The book’s three edges are sprayed with a blue-gold tint, harmonizing with the cover’s color scheme.
