This book is a refined and concise collection of artifacts from Nanjing Museum. It is based on the exhibition titled “To Be Continued: Nanjing in 99 Objects” in 2019, which we have translated into a physical book format. The content preserves the structure and logic of the exhibition, exploring the relationship between the city of Nanjing and its people through 99 precious artifacts, with themes ranging from “Origin of Civilization,” “Capital Prosperity of Nanjing,” “Buddhism and Taoism Flourish” to “Elegant City Culture.”
Nanjing, a verdant cultural metropolis renowned for its lush greenery, inspires the selection of a deep green tone as the foundational color palette, extending from the cover to the chapter pages, setting the stage for the new content. Recognizing the diversity of the artifacts, we have tailored the interior pages to suit different categories, utilizing specialized paper types for better presentation. For example, long scroll paintings are displayed in fold-out pages to fully present them. As for shorter inscriptions or grouped works, they are printed on halved sheets of 16k paper, forming individual booklet-like inserts. The book design allows readers to feel as if they are walking through the exhibition, offering a varied and immersive reading experience.
The book is bound using traditional Chinese thread binding, symbolizing the continuity of history. Through these 99 representative artifacts related to Nanjing’s cultural history, readers are invited to discover the essence of the ancient city.
