如果选择最爱的一句泰戈尔诗,除了人人传诵的那行“夏天的飞鸟”外,便是这首了。雨水、黄昏、疾风、树枝,乃至世间的万物都在泰戈尔的笔下合而为一,恍若我们和他一同坐在夏天的窗前,似有若无地思索生命的最终意义。
If we were to choose a favorite line of Tagore’s poetry, aside from the well-known “Stray birds of summer come to my window to sing and fly away.” it would have to be this one. Raindrops, dusk, gale, and branches—everything in this world converges in Tagore’s writing. Reading his poetry, we feel like sitting with him by a window at summer time, pondering the ultimate meaning of life.
The book begins with a white case, gradually unfolding into a clear and naturally poetic dreamscape. The soft touch of the cotton card paper, along with embossed patterns of grass and leaves, awakens nature within our minds, leaving an eternal impression. As you reach the cover, delicate gold and silver threads freely float across the surface of the dust jacket, meandering and gently wrapping around. They resemble the trajectory of birds flitting through layers of paper within the book, and across different books, leaving behind moments of chance and spontaneity. At last, the birds come to rest at the book’s conclusion.
Beyond the imagery, the layout of the book breaks from the conventional format of English-Chinese bilingual editions. In addition to Tagore’s original English text, this edition includes two classic Chinese translations: Zheng Zhenduo’s modern vernacular translation and Yao Hua’s rendition in five-character regulated verse. These three forms of expression, each represented in distinct styles and layouts, enhance the beauty of poetic language through formal aesthetics. This is not merely a dialogue between two Eastern cultures, Indian and Chinese, but also a resonance between China’s traditional classical prose and modern vernacular, two languages and cultures intertwined. Finally, all the texts are printed in spot colors on 28g and 50g lightweight paper, allowing the ethereal poetry to sing in their most delicate forms.
