这是中国当代艺术家何效义在家乡甘肃马营镇的一次以“铸印”为主题的田野实践项目。他用中国民间古老的铸铁技艺来创作他的印章作品。

This book documents a field practice project by He Xiaoyi, a contemporary Chinese artist, in his hometown of Maying Town, Gansu Province, centered around the theme of “Stamp Casting.” He employs the ancient Chinese folk craft of iron casting to create his seal artworks.

 

书的封面,采用了最简单也最不简单的设计。大地色调代表广阔的田野,我们在“土地”之上用铸好的铁印,烙下了《铸印》。书名“铸印”二字,是真实通过380度高温热烙印在封面之上的。纸张被真实地灼烧,斑驳的烙印在翻阅中逐渐淡化,千百年的历史沧桑感仿佛扑面而来,手作思想灵光乍现,还有火的精神不熄不灭。

The cover design is both simple and profound. Its earthy tone represents the vast expanse of fields, where we have stamped the iron seals and created the work Stamp Casting. The title of the book, “Stamp Casting”, is pressed on the cover by a 380° Celsius heated tool. The paper is genuinely scorched, and the weathered branding fades slightly with each turn of the page, evoking a sense of historical depth, the sudden spark of handmade creativity, and the enduring spirit of fire.

 

艺术家铸印的镜头,逐帧走进甘肃马营镇的三年时光里。我们像翻阅日记一般,可以在书中看到完整的艺术家田野的纪录,从资料梳理、材料选择、材料试验、磨合时间,直至铁水熔化,这是一次充满未知的实践。

The book offers a frame-by-frame glimpse into He Xiaoyi’s three-year journey in Maying Town, Gansu. It unfolds like a diary, detailing the artist’s journey from data compilation, material selection and testing, and time for refinement, to the final melting of iron. This was an experiment full of uncertainties.

 

为了不断增强每一位读者与艺术家的意识连接,我们尽可能丰富了书籍中的细节。比如书中会有一枚生锈的回形针,别着一张“马营”的区域地图,这是艺术家创作实践的起点。以及在“讨论”和“对谈”篇章中,交错的文字版面,还原了多人一起激烈讨论的交流场面。还有,全书的纸张并非牛皮纸或是其他精品纸,而是特地选用的廉价再生纸,以展现田野乡土的气息,粗糙而自然。

To deepen the connection between each reader and the artist, the book is enriched with details. For instance, a rusty paperclip is used to pin a map of the Maying Town, which reminds readers of where the field practice took place. There are interlocking texts in the chapters of “Discussion” and “Conversations”, reflecting the visual sensation of many people discussing and exchanging views. Furthermore, instead of adopting premium materials like kraft paper, the book is made of economical recycled paper, imbuing it with the rugged authenticity and rustic charm of the countryside.
