Photography is like a surgical incision into time, slicing through the seamless flow of life with the click of a shutter. Perhaps the cuts feel inconsequential at first, yet as life continues to flow silently for years on, the pain becomes palpable. Suddenly, there’s a measure and distance between “the past” and “here and now,” revealing the swiftness of life’s passing, especially in old photos. The strangers in those photos seem like guides, quietly returning from the past to lead us into a broader, uncharted space—the time and places once experienced by “others.” These once-existing lives are like stars in the vast universe, small yet significant. Like those brief, silent moments captured in the photos, they point to eternity through unfamiliar love. Life is a journey of blurring and refocusing. It’s memories, perceptions, and mutual gazes that turn every moment into an eternal memory.

The content of this book comprises old photographs collected by the renowned photographer Ma Liang. The book’s design resembles a journal, with old photographs scattered across the cover, creating a strong sense of immersion. Opening the book, the traces of time immediately greet the reader. The preface is printed in monochrome on rustic paper. The book is divided into eight chapters, each designed with the photo studio logos extracted from the old photos, printed in matte gold, and paired with blue pages to create the chapter sections. Each photograph is accompanied by brief text, narrating the passage of time, with photo studios and people on paper emerging in front of you. Decoding each piece of material, I found a way to construct the narrative logic of the entire book: the images and text are printed on two types of paper with different weights and colors, alternating between thin and thick, soft and hard, smooth and rough, monochrome and four-color printing. These subtle variations in texture enhance empathy, as the book’s emotional depth stems from countless details. Flipping through it feels like browsing an old photo album.

The interior text employs a single, engraving font, whose frayed edges perfectly match the book’s character.
