本书是一部摄影书。书的作者是两位来自世界两端被新冠疫情阻隔而无法谋面的摄影艺术家:马良(上海)& Tonje Bøe Birkeland(卑尔根)。
This book is a photographic masterpiece by two photographers from two sides of the world, Ma Liang (Shanghai) and Tonje Bøe Birkeland (Bergen), who were separated and can not meet each other in person because of the pandemic.
2019年,位于卑尔根的多文化机构Northing发起了一个艺术交换项目,邀请挪威摄影师Tonje Bøe Birkeland与中国摄影师马良共同参与合作。当时项目的主题是“布景与风景”。马良擅长在有限的工作室空间中搭建魔幻的舞台布景,摄影作品充满戏剧性的想象力。他通常把他人——演员、模特或是路人作为拍摄对象,来创作具有丰富叙事性的、荒诞迷幻的视觉影像。与之相反,来自卑尔根的艺术家Tonje常常把浩大辽阔的自然风景作为她的舞台。她总是亲自面对镜头,扮演过去被男权的历史学家所遗忘的女性探险家。Northing发现两位艺术家之间这种激烈的反差非常有趣,并希望他们之间的合作能擦出意想不到的火花。但因为疫情,两位艺术家至今未能见面。于是Northing借助互联网的力量促成了一场跨越时空的对话,并让两人以及他们的作品最终在这本书中相遇。
In 2019, Northing, a multicultural institution based in Bergen, initiated an art exchange project, inviting Tonje Bøe Birkeland, a Norwegian photographer to collaborate with Ma Liang, a Chinese photographer. The project’s theme was “Stage & Landscape.” Ma Liang excels in crafting magical stage sets within the confines of a studio, and his photography is filled with dramatic imagination. His work often features others, actors, models, or passersby, as subjects, weaving richly narrative and surreal visual tales. In contrast, Tonje, an artist from Bergen, frequently uses the vast natural landscapes as her stage, where she confronts the camera herself, acting as a forgotten female explorer lost to the annals of patriarchal history. Northing found the stark contrast between the two artists intriguing and hoped their collaboration would spark unexpected creativity. However, due to the pandemic, the two have yet to meet in person. Northing, harnessing the power of the internet, facilitated a dialogue that transcended time and space, ultimately bringing them and their work together in this book.
书中两位摄影艺术家就五个主题展开讨论,配合这五个主题出现的摄影作品之间也构成了一场视觉对话。书籍设计找到了一种创新的装帧方式:把书分成两册(一人一册),由一个书夹把两册书连接在一起。最佳的阅读方式是把两本书平铺在桌面上,向两边同时同步翻阅。书的页码横向在两本书之间跨越,一个展开页包含四页,连贯的四页中两位艺术家的摄影作品根据明晰的视觉线索形成互文与对话。
In the book, the two photographers engage in a dialogue across five themes, with their photographs interwoven to create a visual conversation. The book’s innovative design further enhances this exchange. It is divided into two volumes, one for each artist, and connected by a single book clip. The best way to read this work is to lay both volumes flat on a surface, turning the pages in unison. The page numbers traverse horizontally across the two volumes, with each spread encompassing four pages. In this continuous sequence, the photographers’ works form a visual interplay and dialogue, guided by clear visual cues.
